Australia and New Zealand are on track to implement PINT-A-NZ

E-invoicing implementation through the PEPPOL network plays a pivotal role in the digital transformation process of countries. Its extensive acceptance, continual enhancements and inherent advantages enable a remarkable enhancement of business operations in Australia and New Zealand.

Beginning early 2023, OpenPeppol launched PEPPOL PINT, a recommendation that might become mandatory in certain countries as per the decision of the PEPPOL Authority. For instance, Japan has taken the lead in executing PEPPOL PINT, inspiring Singapore and Malaysia to replicate the process in their respective jurisdictions.

Consequently, the PEPPOL authorities in Australia and New Zealand are assessing the feasibility of transitioning from the current specification (ANZ PEPPOL BIS 3.0) to the novel specification (PINT A-NZ). The latter is anticipated to become compulsory within two years, following Japan's example.

Timetable for implementation

According to the PEPPOL authorities of both countries, the change will take place in 3 phases.

  • Preparation phase. December 2023. This phase includes the publication of the A-NZ specification. It will also allow stakeholders to review the changes and prepare the whole process for adoption. At this stage, the ANZ PEPPOL BIS 3.0 specification would remain mandatory, while PINT A-NZ would remain optional.
  • Implementation phase. April 2024. During this part of the process, issuers will be responsible for building the PINT A-NZ search and routing capability. At the end of this phase, all recipients will need to register to receive the PINT A-NZ specification. For the time being, the ANZ PEPPOL BIS 3.0 specification would remain mandatory, while PINT A-NZ would remain optional.
  • Phase-out. April 2025. At this stage, all users must be able to exchange electronic documents using the PINT A-NZ specification, as it will be the only one supported for sending and receiving invoices and credit notes. From this point, the ANZ PEPPOL BIS 3.0 specification will be retired to make way for PINT A-NZ.

What is the difference from one specification to another?

The main alterations between ANZ PEPPOL BIS 3.0 and PINT A-NZ consist of new specifications and values for business process identifiers, as well as the addition of a new document type identifier scheme with the moniker of the wildcard scheme.

Moreover, business rules have been updated, with new rule identifiers being introduced, while some have been streamlined or eradicated altogether. Additionally, rules that were once classified as "warning" severity level have been abolished.
